Understand the
SMS Sender ID Register.

A starting point for organisations using a name or brand as their SMS sender ID.

What the Register does

The SMS Sender ID Register is established under Part 24B of the Telecommunications Act 1997. It helps identify organisations using branded sender IDs. From 1 July 2026, messages using an unregistered sender ID are labelled Unverified.

Register through a participating provider

Eligible individuals and entities need a valid use case for their sender ID. Applications are made through an originating participating provider. Check ACMA’s list of approved telcos and message providers before choosing a provider.

For an organisation with an ABN, registration involves an authorised ABR contact or an authorised representative identity-check pathway, and acceptance of the applicable terms. Follow your provider’s instructions and ACMA’s current guidance for accessing the Register and confirming an approved registration.

Once registered, you can authorise other participating providers to send messages using your sender ID. Registration and provider authorisation are separate steps.

If you do not have an ABN

Applicants without an ABN use an originating certified provider or its partner. They do not have direct access to the Register. Confirm the available pathway with the relevant provider.
